anyways. drag kings have been around for decades & are equally as important as drag queens. drag masculinity faces serious erasure & that's a problem. support your local drag kings
no I read something about this recently!
it is a combination of:
projectionists used to well trained union workers now they are mostly some guy who works in the cinema and hits play without adjusting any levels
boom operators aren’t allowed to get in as close as they used to and miking performers well isn’t routinely done
directors don’t appreciate setting up and getting good sound on the day sound on the day assuming everything can be fixed in post (it can’t)
sound operators who say ‘hey actually we need one more take of that for sound’ are routinely ignored
tight turnaround and schedules means that the noisier equipment (generators etc) is set up closer and closer to where they’re filming so mixers have to try hide the sound of noisy diesel engines etc that the mics are picking up
a mumble style of delivery is increasingly popular among actors who want to appear naturalistic on screen
film and television is very much considered a visual medium so directors are trained to think of visuals first when filming and sound last
Every time I see a video of a cat that’s just meowing constantly, I think about how they developed meowing exclusively as a way to communicate with humans.
Past kittenhood, I mean. Kittens meow for the same reason human babies cry; to tell their mom “I have needs and wants and I’m so so small and I hardly even know it!” But adult cats have other ways to communicate with each other. They only continue to meow because they realize it’s the only part of their language that gets have anything close to the correct response from humans.
Anyway. Whenever I see videos like this where a human and cat are doing that sort of call-and-response routine, like-
*human talks at the cat like its a person*
meow
*human talks at cat like its a person*
meow
-so on and so forth, like I dunno, it just hits different somehow. Like it’s not the same as dogs barking at humans, dogs barking is a “natural” dog instinct (to my knowledge), but adult meowing is a specifically domestic behavior. They developed it for us. They know we can’t really understand them, the same way the mom in this video knows the cat can’t understand her, but they meow at us anyway. And this cat’s plaintive meows are it begging to be set free of the grooming torture, obviously, but sometimes it seems like it’s just a call and response.
Like you’ll see a video of a human talking at a cat, and the cat meows back between sentences, and the cat is like lying with its eyes half closed or sitting with its back turned to the human and it’s meowing back anyway and you stop and think about it and realize that they’re doing the same thing.
The cat and the human talking at each other when they don’t need anything from each other, that’s- that’s just conversation. It’s literally cross-species small talk, because both the cat and the human are engaging in it just for the sake of hearing a response back.
They can’t understand each other at all, but they continue to communicate purely for the sake of communication. For the pleasure of each other’s company. For the sake of socializing with each other. We don’t even understand each other, and it’s still small talk.
And you think about that and you remember again that adult cats without humans don’t meow and it’s just their human company comfort language and you cry.
Oh fuck I’m so sorry I didn’t realize I reblogged this from you lmao
No worries, I’m still happy you thought of me!

Been hearing this is a problem again.
Don't be a dick in bookmarks, folks. And yes while I made this image, I'm giving free reign. Take it. Spread it far and wide. Because I'm hearing that some readers don't know that their bookmarks are visible.
Editing for clarity, since it's hit 14k notes and I'm tired of repeating myself:
No, I do not care if you think bookmarks are for readers. They're permanently attached to fic- which means authors see them. Authors, you may be shocked to learn... are also readers. So they also read fics- troll bookmark lists for good fics. They check their own bookmarks, perhaps, or stumble upon them in their search for new fic.
It is not censorship to ask for respect. Or kindness. Leave your notes, leave your chapter count, leave your additional tags and thoughts, that's all fine. But you can do that without being mean. Because fandom is a gift we give to each other, shared freely. Treat it with kindness.
Fic writers can see your shitty bookmarks and it’s sucks. Just stop it. If you didn’t like the fic then just push the back button or close the tab. Stop being a dick. Fic writers literally write for free and for fun, no one asked for your hot takes or frankly your bad attitude. No one forced you to read fics. If you didn’t like them that’s whatever but don’t ruin it for the people who write them. Do fucking better.
Bautista said “say it with your chest”
This dude took one look at homophobia, bigotry, and toxic masculinity and said ‘fuck that’ and then crushed them all with his enormous biceps and I think that was very excellent of him.
He looks like he gives great hugs
#wait what happened i need to know
Shelly Duvall was basically abused by the director during the whole shooting in order to get the “best takes” according to him
The magnum opus of his cruelty toward Duvall came in the form of one of "The Shining's" most iconic scenes — the baseball bat confrontation on the stairs. Kubrick made Duvall and Nicholson shoot the scene in a record-setting 127 takes, something that horror fans love to spout off as a fun bit of trivia. The result of the constant takes were Duvall's hands were shredded raw from gripping the bat for such a prolonged period of time, her voice was hoarse from crying, her eyes became swollen, and she left the set completely dehydrated. The moments we see on screen of Duvall crying in pain, fear, and exhaustion were not acting, but an actor delivering lines while enduring a trauma response.
Kubrick's psychological brutalization of Duvall was so severe, her hair began falling out. "To wake up on a Monday morning, so early, and realize that you had to cry all day because it was scheduled — I would just start crying," Duvall said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. In the equally iconic "door scene," Jack Nicholson destroyed nearly 60 doors to get the shot to Kubrick's liking, filming this one moment over the course of three days. The scene was mostly improvised, and Kubrick reportedly kept information regarding Nicholson's choices to tear down the door with an axe from Duvall, meaning her reactions are authentic. This isn't acting, this is responding to trauma.
Many of Duvall's lines were unexpectedly cut, she was frequently kept isolated, and she was forced to wait for extensive periods of time before performing her scenes to throw her off. Vivian's documentary even shows moments of Kubrick not acting alone, but instead requiring the rest of the crew to follow his lead. "Don't sympathize with Shelley," he says to the crew. He also made the decision to never compliment her work, and instead criticized every choice or impulse she had for the character. At one point, he encourages the rest of the crew to ignore her and tells them to disregard any needs she expresses. Kubrick is notorious for being a perfectionist, but at what cost?
Kubrick chose to shoot "The Shining" chronologically, which pushed the filming to a whopping 500 days. This means Duvall spent over a year of her life being tormented by a man in an untouchable position of power. Kubrick was already considered an auteur at this point in his career, with his unconventional (see: abusive) techniques hailed as genius rather than correctly identified as harmful.
